Turf Talk

December 2011

This is the latest edition of a newsletter designed to provide information to the members and guests of Oyster Creek Golf Club regarding maintenance of the golf course. It is our intent to keep everyone informed of special projects and non-routine maintenance practices occurring on the course.
Upcoming projects/changes/updates:

New landscaping: We are in the process of installing new landscaping in several areas on the course. A planter will be constructed near the front of the pro shop and an area near #5 tee will become a new landscape bed. We hope that everyone enjoys these aesthetic enhancements.
Greens roller: The course has acquired a new piece of maintenance equipment known as a greens roller. This piece of equipment is used to provide a smoother, faster putting surface. Periodic use of the roller should lead to better playing conditions on the greens.
Winter traffic and the 90 degree rule: The winter months bring about an increase in cart traffic to the golf course. At the same time the course is experiencing this increase in traffic the turfgrass on the golf course is entering into a period of slower growth and is not able to recover from the wear and tear that golf cart traffic causes. Oyster Creek Golf Club is fortunate to have cart paths that extend throughout the entire course. The more that golfers can keep carts on the paths the less damage the carts will create to the turfgrass and the nicer the course conditioning will be. We ask that whenever possible golfers adhere to the 90 degree rule in regards to golf cart traffic. The 90 degree rule suggests that golf carts stay on the cart paths until they have reached the position where the ball to be played is and then travel off the cart path at a 90 degree angle to reach the ball. The cart paths are able to accommodate golf cart traffic much better than the turfgrass and the more the carts can travel on them the nicer the course will be.
